When we think of degenerative disease we think of deterioration of the body. We don't think of deterioration of the mind. But the brain is no more or no less vulnerable to the ravages of our diet. The components of what we eat don't just circulate below the neck.
Could Alzheimer's disease be yet another variation on the theme, that of a degenerative disease-perhaps the grand finale-brought on by a lifelong diet of flesh eating? We perceive Alzheimer's as a new and evolving menace, but is it possible we are catching up to the disease through knowledge and advanced diagnostics, bringing it onto our radar screen?
Because of our perceptions, and because the degeneration of the mind seems more profound and tragic than the degeneration of the body, we see Alzheimer's disease as a whole different ballgame. But there is only one ballgame and if we want to continue to play it we may want to change our thinking...while we still can.
