Fish might be the last meat to fall. People replace meat with fish to improve their health so they can get the protein they need without the fat and cholesterol. It sounds like progress, but then so does getting a stay of execution for 24 hours.
The fact is, fish is just one more animal not intended for human consumption. When we review the objective evidence this statement doesn’t appear controversial at all. In fact, if we were going to replace land animals with fish in our diet we could make an argument that your health could be further compromised.
We think the ocean exists to spawn fish for our consumption. “How else could the ocean serve us?” we reason. For starters, the ocean provides us recreation, beauty and aesthetics, pharmaceuticals, organic food (in plants), global photosynthesis, climate regulation, carbon storage, atmospheric gas regulation, and nutrient cycling.
Maybe the next time we are face-to-face with our vegetarian acquaintances, instead of having to sheepishly pronounce, “I only eat fish,” we can proudly say, “I am now a vegetarian!”
