There is a lot more in meat than meets the eye. We can’t see them, smell them, or taste them. Most likely we can’t spell, pronounce, or describe them, either. They promote growth, kill disease, and may well kill us. They are antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, and pathogens.
Antibiotics are placed in the feed of animals to combat disease and increase growth. Eight times the amount is fed to animals than is prescribed to humans. Hormones are given to animals to increase growth. They are so concentrated that we could taste a grain of sugar in a swimming pool if our taste buds were as sensitive to flavor as our target cells are to hormones. Pesticides were developed to kill living creatures; some to kill humans. Consider that most pesticides don’t discriminate. Pathogens such as salmonella, campylobacter, and E. coli enjoy the flesh of animals as most Americans do. Perhaps they will join us for a meal sometime.
And we thought all we had to worry about was the fat and cholesterol.
